                                                  A Note from Riley

Do you have a story and photo you would like to share about your  adopted pup or dog?  We're looking for some laughs, maybe some tears, how they have changed your life, how they have touched your heart.  We will post your photo on our home page and story to the Your Adoption Story page to share with all of our visitors.  Maybe, just maybe, you'll inspire someone to share their life with a homeless dog. Please send a photo and your story to: OhioPuppyRescue@aol.com or CentralOhioDogRescueLeague@gmail.com

Your Donations Help Support Our Community Projects

2012 was a year of great success and impact on the community through Ohio Puppy Rescue.

*****Ohio Puppy Rescue Spay/Neuter Fund continues to focus primarily on our partnership with Pikes Friends, Pike Co. Humane Association, Shawnee Animal Hospital to provide free spay and neutering.  Our efforts have a "no questions asked" service to Pike and Scioto Counties for those who wish to have their dog altered.  The word has spread to several residents of these Counties who joined the efforts to stop unwanted dogs in their Counties.

*****We continued our educational program at the elementary school level in the Columbus area, which focus on puppy mills and the drive to spay and neuter pets, by providing copies of "Mighty Mimi" to the library.  Mighty Mimi was written by our own volunteer, Margo Mayberry.

*****We  request a "Pay It Forward" commitment from all who adopt a mill survivor.  This means that each person in the family promises to learn about puppy mills and tells at least one person about what they learned.

*****We began a close relationship with Central Ohio Dog Rescue League and adopted the group as our sister organization.  In 2013, we will formally join talent and experience to work with local organizations who focus on shutting down breeders who don't provide humane conditions and medical treatment to companion animals.

In order to continue our efforts in supporting our community, the rescue community, and the pet over population, additional funding is required. We need continuous and generous donations in order to sustain our life-changing work into 2013 and future years.  Please consider a donation to enable our work to continue.  Donations can be made by adopting one of our wonderful rescues, donate through your Community Giving programs at your workplace or directly by sending a monetary gift through
PayPal.  If you wish to send a check or money order, please contact us via email for details.

  Ohio Puppy Rescue

OPR/CODRL Mission Statement

The mission of OPR/CODRL is:

  • The rescue, care and adoption of unwanted and homeless dogs.
  • Continued education of the general public on the importance of
    • Spaying/neutering
    • Positive training methods
    • Exercise and appropriate medical treatment with humane care
    • The understanding of puppy mills
  • To work hand and hand with other ethical rescue groups promoting good working relationships to save more lives so that we can continue our passion that enables small miracles for the dogs and the people who love them.

Our purpose is to rescue homeless dogs, owner surrender, and Puppy Mill survivors/Breeder releases to be adopted to properly matched families through a multi-step adoption process including dog training and education of the families to ensure permanent placement.

Our History:
  •  OhioPuppy Rescue (OPR) was established in February, 2008.  We obtained our 501(c)(3) status in April, 2010.  In 2013 we began our partnership with Central Ohio Dog Rescue League, combining our talents and knowledge of rescue in support of local agency efforts.  Our primary focus is the rescue and fostering of puppies, pregnant females, mother's with new litters and motherless litters that have been turned into shelters or found on the streets and puppy mill survivors. Our belief is that a dog who has proper training along with an adoptive family's education of proper care creates the foundation for permanent placement.
    • 2008 Adoptions:    45
    • 2009 Adoptions:  113
    • 2010 Adoptions:  116
    • 2011 Adoptions:  158
    • 2012 Adoptions:    60

2012 Accomplishments

  • 492 wonderful puppies and dogs to wonderful forever homes.  With those 492 adoptions, there are a minimum of 492 people out there educating others on the need to adopt a pet from a shelter or rescue.
  • We continued the Ohio Puppy Rescue Spay/Neuter Fund partnership with Pikes Friends, Pike Co. Humane Association, and Shawnee Animal Hospital  to provide free spay and neutering.  Our "no questions asked" service has been highly successful for those who wish to have their dog altered.
  • We worked with Pilots N Paws and Animal Rescue Flights.  These 501(c)(3)organizations support volunteer pilots who assist with transporting rescues all over the country.
  • We supported and celebrated the passing Legislative Bills which are established to improve the lives of dogs living in puppy mills.
  • We continued our educational program at the elementary school level in the Columbus area, which focus on puppy mills and the drive to spay and neuter pets.  It is our belief that the youth of our country are the ones who will bring an end to puppy mills.
  • We obtained a "Pay It Forward" commitment to all who adopt a mill survivor so that all members of the family learn more about puppy mills and tell at least one more person.  The hope is that the one person will then tell another.
  • We committed to never pay for a mill release but rather support local humane organizations in shutting mills down.
  • We started the process of adding Central Ohio Dog Rescue League (CODRL) as a dba of Ohio Puppy Rescue.

What still needs to be accomplished?

  • Continue educating the public why spaying and neutering is essential in saving the lives of 3 to 4 million pets per year from being euthanized each year.
  • Have Ohio become one of the "puppy-free pet store" states.
  • Continue and grow our relationship with shelters to rescue dogs in their care and decrease the number of pets euthanized.
  • Continue to work with local agencies to assist with their efforts to shut down breeders who mistreat companion animals and provide foster homes for the survivors.
  • Find a cure for parvo and distemper.
  • End the use of gas chambers for euthanizing pets in shelters
  • Continue to pressure state officials to enforce laws protecting animals in mills and shelters.
